An Integrative Approach to Psychology
The Origins of Transcendent Psychology
Transcendent Psychology is a concept I developed in 2021, born from a desire to open new horizons in my work. As a psychologist trained in a positivist tradition, my understanding of the human mind was largely materialistic. The organic brain, in my view, was the primary driver of all human thought, behavior, and interaction. From that perspective, accessing a spiritual understanding of the self felt nearly impossible — personality and consciousness were simply byproducts of neural networks firing inside the brain.
Yet I always sensed something was missing.
More than ten years ago, my encounter with shamanic practices and entheogens shifted my perspective on the human mind completely. These experiences awakened in me a sense of purpose and connection I had never felt before. My materialistic mindset gave way to a more holistic, integrative outlook — one open to the unexplained dimensions of human existence. That turning point reignited my interest in mysticism, drawing me back to the spiritual path I had walked as a teenager: a search for meaning and connection.
The deeper realization that followed was striking in its simplicity — everything had already been discovered. Ancient mystical traditions had been exploring these questions for millennia: Hinduism, Buddhism, Semitic mysticism, Kabbalah, Yoga, and many others. Psychology, in its truest sense, is not a modern invention; it has existed as long as humanity itself, developed across different cultures with its own language, techniques, and frameworks of understanding.
The word psychology is commonly associated with clinical practice, yet its etymology reveals a far richer meaning — it is, literally, the study of the soul. From a materialistic standpoint, the soul cannot be observed, measured, or quantified, which is why it has been excluded from the scope of conventional modern psychology. And yet, the soul has been the central object of inquiry in ancient traditions across the world.
Transcendent Psychology reclaims that dimension. It is an approach that incorporates the soul into the study and comprehension of human existence — broadening the spectrum of psychology, honoring the wisdom of ancient traditions, and integrating their understanding of consciousness into the practical application of the discipline.
